Description:  An exhibition of the calligraphic art of Norika Maedo and the ceramic sculpture of Jeff Shapiro will be on view at the Kleinert/James Arts Center, 34 Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY, from June 19 through August 1, 2010. “Markings” will open with a public reception Saturday, June 19, from 4-6 pm. A special preview party, “Clay/Calligraphy/Sushi/Sake” will take place Friday, June 18 from 6-8 pm. Maedo and Shapiro will speak and work spontaneously in the gallery while the audience enjoys Japanese food and wine. Advance tickets only ($25/$20 WBG members). They have a temporal presence--the gesture of ink on paper or fire on clay. They evolve from a strong Japanese tradition interpreted by contemporary artists. What a Japanese calligrapher living in Canada and an American ceramist who learned his craft in Japan have in common is a mastery of traditional discipline evolving into original, spontaneous personal statements.
