The food is always good at Leo’s Pizzeria

I love Leo’s. I have lived in Newburgh for almost a year now, and this is my all-time favorite place to go out to eat. The prices are reasonable, the service friendly and the atmosphere is casual; right up my alley.

On the outside it just looks like a little hole-in-the-wall pizza joint, but inside it is cozy and actually has a pretty good selection of food.

I have been a regular fixture at least once a month and recently more. I even had my first date with my boyfriend here.

We started dinner with some garlic knots for an appetizer and some of their delicious bread. The garlic knots are not too greasy and have just enough garlic on them to be tasty but not too over the top. The bread is fluffy and hot, the butter just melts right into it.

Pizza is a staple at Leo’s and it is wonderful. I personally like a fairly thin crust that is a bit crunchy. The sauce is flavored with a nice mix of spices, and they do not skimp on the cheese. We have had it topped with pepperoni, onions and plain. The toppings are generous and always fresh. The slices are large and one or two pieces can easily satisfy someone.

On my last visit I had the cheeseburger with french fries. The cheeseburger is huge and comes on a sesame seed bun. The burger was very good and cooked just the way I like it. It has a piece of cheese on top and one on the bottom. I also got to choose what kind of cheese I wanted on top. Provolone was the choice and it really helped to make the burger. It came with shredded lettuce, a favorite of mine, thinly sliced tomatoes and onions. Because everything is so fresh, I actually did not top my burger but ate the lettuce and tomatoes on the side with just a little salt and pepper. Delicious. The fries are big and the portion is more than enough to satisfy even a large appetite. Topped with just a little ketchup, my burger was thoroughly enjoyable. I paired it with a delicious Merlot they offer. The wine was just to my liking, not too dry and not too sweet.

My date had Veal Marsala with a nice garden salad. The salad was fresh and a nice sized portion with a yummy homemade Bleu cheese dressing. The veal was tender and full of mushrooms, just how he likes it. And it was served piping hot. The sauce was a melow brown brandy sauce. The portion was generous, and he was quite satisfied when he was finished.

On other visits my family and I have enjoyed lots of great stuff from here. I particularly like the eggplant rollatini appetizer. It was a good thing I ordered the appetizer porton and not the meal. The rollatini with Minestrone soup was a full meal for me. The soup was a nice broth with lots of big vegetable chunks which were not mushy. The eggplant was tender and with just the right amount of sauce and lots of mozzarella cheese.

My older son is partial to the stromboli. This tasty treat is chock full of great stuff including pepperoni, sausage and cheese inside a crunchy pizza dough The portion is so tremendous that my kid can eat this for the next three days. What a bargain!

The wait staff is always friendly, and they tend to remember us when we come in. I like that, especially in this day and age when people act like strangers even though they have seen you before. My favorite waitress is a real sweetheart and comes back several times to make sure everything is to our liking, and she is quick to clear off the empty plates.

I really can’t say enough about my favorite little restaurant in Newburgh except to say, “Try it. You’ll love it!” Leo’s will continue to be the place to go in my house for a long time. They also have two other locations in Cornwall and Wappingers Falls. Go. You won’t be sorry.

The other two locations are: 1475 Route 9D, Wappingers Falls, 845-838-3446 and 22 Quaker Ave., Cornwall, 845-534-3446.
